Known in the US as The Lonely Girl, the second volume in Edna O’Brien’s Country Girl trilogy created quite a scandal when it came out in 1962. (In 1964, it was made into a film starring Rita Tushingham, Peter Finch, and Lynn Redgrave.) No longer so shocking, the story of a young Irish woman come to the city and learning about more than how to cross busy streets still holds its value. This is Edna O’Brien, after all.
