Writers Out Loud
by
The implementation of and codification of legislation promoting politically motivated and otherwise agenda-oriented book bans is growing at a frightening pace in the United States. “Writers Out Loud” was born from a desire to do something positive during a time of darkness. With the support of a friend with a large, beautiful salon and three enthusiastic fellow writers (Janet Skeslien Charles, Susan Jane Gilman, and Yun Wei), I organized a private fundraiser on behalf of the “Freedom to Read” fund at the Authors Guild Foundation. Attendance was by invitation and dependent upon a donation.
The salon filled to capacity, guests went away claiming to feel empowered, and the evening raised over $10,000 for the fund. To resurrect a well-worn phrase: Yes, we can!
